Period cottage restoration and extension in Frome

Location Frome
Completion Spring 2015
Cost £250K

17th century worker’s cottage transformed into a beautiful environmentally friendly home.

The Craft Renovations team both designed and built this cottage, which historically had been part of the Longleat estate. Throughout the renovation we retained and highlighted many of the cottage’s original features, restoring exposed stone and brick walls to create warm textures.

A major new extension was added, including a spacious kitchen, dining area and family area, which increased the building’s footprint by 150%. The kitchen features a wine cellar pod and a number of rooms leading off – including a heated boot room, utility and washroom/WC. Virtually the entire kitchen wall facing the garden consists of custom-made glass sliding doors, which when folded back completely creates a sense of shared space with the garden.

A magnificent feature in the new extension is an imposing raw steel staircase with steps made from green oak railway sleepers, a balance of strength and grace that was designed and handmade specially for the cottage.

Upstairs is a reclaimed wooden floor leading to three bedrooms and a remarkable bathroom. At its centre is a large, deep, roll top copper bath alongside an old brick fireplace with wood burner – a striking contemporary design mixing stainless steel, copper and warm red period brick, highlighted against dark walls

The house is insulated to high standards, and has solar panels fitted discreetly on part of the roof largely hidden from sight from the ground. The Craft Renovations team designed and carried out every aspect of this unique project, from interior design to the last exterior details.
